Keep Tulips From Drooping

I love to have tulips in the house during the winter, because they make me feel like Spring is still a possibility no matter how cold out it currently is!  I found tulips for $3 a bunch at our local grocery store the other day and had to grab some since it was artic here this weekend.

The one thing about tulips that can be a bummer, is their tendency to droop, as soon as you put them in the vase.  I tried a Pinterest trick this time and it worked!  I actually combined two common tricks, so not 100% sure which one was the secret, but both are so easy, I don’t mind repeating them both.

First, I left the tulips in their store binding overnight.  Meaning, I took them out of the plastic envelope/bag thing you carry them in, but I left them attached to each other by the bindings/bands and stuck them in a vase of water.  The reasoning behind this trick, is because tulips are hollow stemmed, keeping them together allows them to absorb the water without drooping.

I also added a penny to the water in the vase.  I’ve read about this trick for a couple years and always forget to do it.  I honestly don’t know the reason for it, but I am sure it changes the alkaline of the water.

It’s been a few days, and so far so good as you can see below.  Aren’t they so pretty?   A few of the leaves have drooped and the tulips aren’t standing straight up and down like a soldier, but I like them a little more natural myself.  This is a huge improvement from the last time I bought tulips, so I am declaring this a Pinterest Success!!

Quick and Easy Christmas Crafts

The countdown is upon us and Christmas is almost here!  December is going really fast I think.  I am all set on my gifts, but because of our dog, I haven’t been able to decorate like I usually do.  Because of that, I feel like I am not quite prepared yet!

I also haven’t done one Christmas craft this year!  To rectify that situation, I gathered up a couple quick and easy Christmas crafts that I thought you might want to see too!

Quick and Easy Christmas Crafts

This Merry craft is super quick and definitely super easy!  It’s made with pipecleaners and  pre-wrapped burlap.  Full tutorial is found here.   PS: I need to find this pre-wrapped burlap for some other crafts stat!

Quick and Easy Christmas Crafts

I fell in love with this Gingerbread Hula Girl felt ornament!  They used a cutting machine to create the Gingerbread base, but you could use a cookie cutter and trace it on felt too.  I’m going to have to make some of these!  Find the tutorial here.

Quick and Easy Christmas Crafts

Pom-pom garlands are super quick and easy to create and can be modified for every holiday.  This one was created for Valentine’s Day, but I think it fits for Christmas too.  Find the tutorial here.

Five Summer Projects for Adults

I want to start off by saying thanks for sticking with the blog over the past few weeks.  I’ve had a lot going on and unfortunately, the blog is the first to go when time is short.  I’m back today with five fun summer projects for adults.  I have tons of projects saved on my Pinterest boards and used to go crazy buying the supplies and then not actually doing the project!  I decided awhile ago, to make a list of the projects I wanted to accomplish in a set time period and only concentrate on those.  It seems to help my crafting A.D.D.!

Here’s my five summer projects for this summer.

Eugenia Kim Sun HatEugenia Kim Sun Hat

You probably have seen these blogger fave Eugenia Kim hats everywhere.  They are in my opinion, crazily priced.  Apparently, I am not the only one who thinks that, because there are DIYs all over the net.  I like this tutorial from Me and Mr Jones the best.

I am all ready to go on this craft, I just need to pull the trigger.  I found the sun hat at Forever XVI for $14 and bought the sequin trim ribbon at Joann’s.   The only thing holding me up is getting the writing right.  I am overthinking it and just need to do it!  Let me know if you make one too!  It’s adorable for vacation shots!

Memorial Day is right around the corner and as usual, it’s a combo of patriotism and the start of summer.  I thought it might be fun to round up some nail art that represents both sides of Memorial Day.  There’s tons more on my Nails Pinterest page.

Best St Patrick’s Day Nail Art

Tomorrow is March 1st, so St Patrick’s Day is right around the corner and I’m back with the best St Patrick’s Day Nail art!

I scoured Pinterest and Instagram for the cutest designs I could find.  I have to admit, some of the nail art scared me a little bit! Ha! It just was too over the top for me personally.  I do think even some of the over the top designs could be workable if you only used them on a nail or two.  Here we go with the best St Patrick’s Day nail art out there!

Paula Deen’s Crockpot Mac n Cheese

Mac n Cheese is one of those foods I love to eat, but hate to make.  It’s just a huge pain to me to make it from scratch.  And any time I’ve tried to make it, it hasn’t turned out great.  I like a creamier mac n cheese and the recipes I have tried in the past have been too dry for my liking.  Therefore, I was super excited to find Paula Deen’s recipe on Pinterest!

I knew if it was a Paula Deen recipe it was going to be great!  However, I was concerned about the calorie count.  She isn’t known for her diet food.  I checked around on Pinterest some more and found this version via  She substituted some full fat items for low fat and declared it just as good.  I mixed my version with low fat and full fat, because I haven’t found a low fat cheese that I can stand yet!

As soon as I read this recipe, I was in, it is just much easier, at least to me, than the other versions I have tried.  It is not something you can make and leave for the whole day, because it only stays in the crockpot for about 2 1/2 hours.

Paula Deen's Crockpot Mac n Cheese

Paula Deen’s Crockpot Mac n Cheese (slightly adapted)

2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni

4 tablespoons butter

2 1/2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese

3 eggs

1/2 cup sour cream

1 can condensed cheddar cheese soup

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup whole milk

1/2 teaspoon dry mustard

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  1. Boil the macaroni in water for six minutes.  Drain and put aside.
  2. In a medium saucepan, mix butter and cheese.  Stir until cheese melts (approx. 5 mins)
  3. In the crockpot, combine the melted cheese mixture and all other ingredients (I skipped the eggs).  Add the drained macaroni and stir everything together lightly.
  4. Set crockpot to low and cook for 2 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

As I noted above, I skipped adding the eggs and I don’t think it changed the integrity of the dish.

Paula Deen's Crockpot Mac n Cheese

How did it go?

We really liked it.  It was very reminiscent of Stouffer’s mac n cheese.  I am not a huge fan of sharp cheddar, so I felt it was a tad too sharp for me and my husband agreed.  I think I will use a mix of mild and sharp the next time I make it.  It was really easy to throw together and I think we probably could have eaten it at 2 hours versus 2 1/2 hours.  Overall, I think it was a win and I loved that I didn’t have to turn the oven on.  I used a crockpot bag (I do every time I use the crockpot) so clean up was super simple, one pan!

I would like to substitute some more of the ingredients to make it lower in calories next time too, though not sure I’ll ever be a fan of low fat cheese!

I’d love to hear if you try it!
